Hospital Standardised Mortality Ratios (HSMRs) allow us to see whether death rates in hospitals are changing given the current mix of illnesses being treated. An estimate of the number of expected deaths is calculated for each hospital based on the characteristics of patients admitted. Then the actual number of deaths is compared with this figure giving a "standardised rate".
HSMR Trend Report Publication
Our colleagues at QIE publish HSMR data 90 days after the end of each reporting quarter. This ensures that the information is more reliable as it allows time for a data refresh. There is additional time allowed for QIE to process, analyse and quality assure the data before publication.
